Twisted Pizza

This Twisted Pizza recipe is one of our new fav ways to eat pizza! Homemade dough is stuffed with pasta sauce + cheese, then rolled up jelly-roll style and twisted into a pizza that’s baked in a springform pan.

Remember that time I decided to combine apple crisp with baked french toast, then add booze to the mix too? It was a crazy idea that was totally fab. And friends, we’re about to go into crazy town again. Because I had another idea – and it was delicious: Twisted Pizza! I have made it no less than 3 times since the powers that be zapped the idea into my noggin this month.

Why Is It Called Twisted Pizza?

I decided to call this twisted pizza because that’s how you put this beauty together. You make some pizza dough, roll it out and then fill it with sauce and cheese. Each piece of dough is then rolled up jelly-roll style (same as you would do for cinnamon buns), then the two ropes of filled dough are twisted together before being baked. Ta da! Twisted pizza.

Key Ingredients

Here’s a quick overview of what you’ll need to make twisted pizza. Be sure to scroll down to the recipe card for specific amounts.

  • Pizza dough. I like to use this homemade pizza dough recipe, which is what I use to make birra pizza too.
  • Sauce. I usually use my pasta sauce recipe, but you can also use your favorite brand of store-bought sauce.
  • Butter. You can use salted or unsalted, whichever you have on hand.
  • Cheese. I used low-moisture shredded mozzarella cheese but you could use whatever your favorite pizza combo is. Just don’t use a cheese that will release a lot of liquid, like fresh mozzarella, as that will prevent the insides of the twisted pizza from baking properly.

How to Make Twisted Pizza

  • Prep your tools. Line a springform pan with parchment paper or spray it with PAM. Set aside. Preheat your oven to 375°F.
  • Make the pizza dough. Prepare 2 batches of this dough recipe. After it has risen divide the dough into two pieces and roll each one out to a rectangle approximately 16 x 10“. Make sure you don’t roll the dough too thin or it will tear once you fill it and roll it.
  • Fill the dough. Spread half of the sauce on each rolled out piece of dough, making sure to leave about a 1 inch margin around the edges of the dough. Top with half of the cheese, again leaving the margin clear.
  • Roll up jelly roll style. Pinch each edge of the dough as you roll it up, folding it in to prevent the filling from falling out. Roll up both of the pieces of dough that you filled with sauce and cheese. Handle the dough gently or it is more likely to tear as you roll it up. (It is not a big deal if small tears appears, just pinch them closed as best as possible. You’ll have have some sauce and cheese on the outside of your baked twisted pizza, which is totally fine!)

  • Twist the pizza. Once you have rolled up each of the pieces of dough, twist them together, and then roll the twist in upon itself to form a rough circle.
  • Top with butter. Transfer the shaped go to your prepared springform pan. Brush the dough with the melted butter.
  • Bake for 35-45 minutes or until light golden and cooked through. Brush with any remaining melted butter about 10 minutes before the cooking time has ended. Then place back in the oven to finish baking.
  • Let rest for at least 30 minutes before removing from pan and slicing. If you try to slice it immediately the bread will not hold its shape and the filling will fall out.

Tips for Success

  • Line your springform pan with parchment paper. This isn’t 100% necessary but it does make it easier to remove the pizza from the pan when it is done.
  • Add other fillings in moderation. You can add other things to your twisted pizza, just be careful not to add so much extra filling that it is hard to roll up the dough. I have added pepperoni slices chopped into pieces before (smaller bits make it easier to cut the pizza later). Another favorite addition is baby spinach sautéed with a bit of olive oil and lots of garlic. You can see how I make my baby spinach in this maple tofu with greens recipe.
  • Let it cool. This is super important! If you don’t give the pizza at least 30 minutes to cool after it finishes baking it wont hold its shape when you cut into it. Letting it cool also helps prevent burned mouths.

What Goes with Twisted Pizza?

Twisted Pizza is pretty much a meal unto itself, but you can definitely serve it with some fun sides! We love it with fried green tomatoes, tempura fried fiddlehead ferns or even crunchy strawberry bruschetta.

In terms of drinks, it depends on what vibe you’re going for. Want to hit the summer notes? Serve this pizza with mango lemonade, an Arnold Palmer drink or a John Daly drink. Going for pub vibes? Serve it with a Snakebite!

How to Store and Reheat Leftovers

Let the pizza cool to room temperature, then store extra slices in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.

Reheat individual slices in the microwave for about 30 seconds, then finish reheating them in a toaster oven (affiliate link) for 3-4 minutes at 350F. The microwave will warm the inside of the twisted pizza, while the oven will crisp up the crust and prevent it from getting soggy.
