What is a Mojito?

A mojito is a classic cocktail that originated in Cuba. It is made with rum, fresh lime juice, simple syrup, mint leaves, and soda water. The mint leaves are muddled with simple syrup and lime to release their essential oils, which infuse the drink with bright and aromatic flavor.

In this recipe, we are adding strawberries to the mix and swapping simple syrup for maple syrup! The strawberries are muddled along with the mint leaves. The maple syrup achieves the same goal as simple syrup by dissolving into the cocktail and adding a touch of sweetness.

How to Make a Strawberry Mojito

Here’s a quick look at how to make a strawberry mojito. Be sure to scroll down to the recipe card for ingredients and amounts.

  • Prep the lime. Cut half of a lime into 4 small wedges.
  • Prep the strawberries. Remove the tops from 3 of the strawberries and roughly chop them. Reserve the last strawberry to use as garnish.
  • Muddle. In a 16-oz highball glass or mason jar, combine the lime wedges, 3-4 fresh mint leaves, the chopped strawberries, and the maple syrup. Mash with a muddler for about 30 seconds to release the oils in the mint and meld all the flavors together.
  • Add rum and ice. Pour the rum into your glass, then add a generous amount of ice. I fill my glass about 3/4 full or sometimes almost to the top.
  • Finish with club soda or seltzer. Top off your glass with plain club soda or seltzer.
  • Garnish and serve. Garnish with the remaining mint leaf. Make a cut at the bottom of your remaining strawberry, then use a garnish on the side of your glass.

Tips for Success

  • Fresh mint. It is important to use fresh mint leaves that are bright green and free of brown spots. The mint adds a lot of flavor to the finished drink so you want it to be fresh, quality flavor. I like appletini mint in particular, but any kind of mint will work.
  • Fresh strawberries. Frozen strawberries don’t really work in this recipe because they won’t have as much flavor as fruit that is grown in season. Since excellent strawberry flavor is a key part of making a strawberry mojito, stick with fresh berries.
  • Make it a vodka mojito. You can swap the rum for an equal amount of vodka and make a “vodka mojito” instead.
  • Use simple syrup. If you have simple syrup in the fridge, you can use an equal amount of simple syrup instead of maple syrup.
  • Turn this into a mocktail. This drink is also delicious without the booze. If you like, just make the recipe as outlined below and leave out the rum to make a refreshing strawberry mocktail.
