  • Step 1: Using your knife, cut the melon in half.
  • Step 2: Next, lay one half cut-side-down on the cutting board and chop the melon into slices lengthwise.

The best way to pick a winning watermelon is to give it a thump! You’re after a melon that’s nice and heavy with a hollow-sounding thunk. You can also check that the field spot (a paler spot on the outside of a watermelon rind) is yellow, which indicates the watermelon is ripe.
